Over thirty years ago Kathy Ann Abell and her husband designed and built their house from the ground up. In the small alcove beneath the stairs, Kathy started her own interior design business. What began with a single desk and a few fabric books has now grown into the successful business that Kathy Ann Abell Interiors is today; San Diego’s award-winning, full-service interior design firm.
Tell us a little about your business—what are your specialties?
We specialize in unique and comfortable designs for private homes and boutique hospitality spaces. I’ve been in business for over twenty years, and I love to help make our clients’ spaces something they love walking into every day.
How would you describe your style and your process for creating spaces?
My goal is to create a space that is specific to the way clients live their lives. I want to combine the practicality of everyday living with fresh and beautiful aesthetics.
Is there a recent project you are most proud of and why?
Our team just finished a large new build in Kansas City. This multi-year project was all about creating a comfortable and welcoming home for our clients. They wanted to utilize unique pieces, combined with cozy fabrics and fresh styling.
Why do you turn to Sarreid when looking for certain pieces?
Sarreid has so many distinct and different pieces—pieces that you don’t see everywhere else. I love utilizing their items, especially when it comes to making a statement.
Do you have a favorite piece from Sarreid?
I recently used the Giselle Jupe Table in the foyer of our Kansas City project. It was such a stately table that gave the space a beautiful warmth and truly anchored the space.
Where do you find the most inspiration for creating new spaces?
I’m inspired by clients—the way that they live life, the places they like to travel to, and the things that bring them joy. I want their home to reflect them and it’s my job to create a beautiful space that is specific to them.

Lastly, Do you have any design tips you swear by?
Balance, proportion, and scale. It’s important to balance color and texture; make sure that the furniture is proportionate; and that the scale of the design fits within the space.
