Krista Alterman is the creative director and founder of Krista + Home and has earned the reputation as Palm Beach County’s go-to Interior Designer.
Tell us a little about you and your firm?
In my early 20’s, I was studying Acting at The New School in NYC, making the rounds in Los Angeles and Manhattan auditioning for pilot season. On a whim, I auditioned for an HGTV show, booked it, and realized that I better learn more about design. So, I ended up back at The New School to study at Parsons School of Design! Looking back, it was the perfect route for me, and really a return to self. I remember as far back as seven years old drawing elevations and dissections of homes and apartment buildings. I loved to show people “living” in their spaces. That’s why design is such a personal process for me.
After working in television for years and hosting two HGTV series, KRISTA + HOME was born. Running a full-service interior design firm and helping people create gorgeous homes throughout South Florida is truly a dream. Also, for the past year I have had the honor of being an adjunct professor of interior design at Parsons! I have really come full circle.

What does Coastal Interior Design mean to you?
My version of coastal is to pull back on the theme-y and kitschy idea of a coastal home. I like to create a vibe that is subtle, organic and fresh. When my clients want a classic coastal look, I always encourage them to include modern elements to keep it fresh.
I am always inspired by elements of the beautiful outdoors – the beautiful blues of the ocean, the soft warm sand, and the rich hues of the lush greenery and blossoms that surround us. We are lucky to be in beautiful Palm Beach, Florida so there is inspiration everywhere.

What are your favorite elements to bring into a coastal project?
I like to use natural fabrics, that are inspired by the coastal environment, as well as palette that is inspired by the outdoors. I use light, airy finishes on all of the pieces in my coastal homes with a palette that is literally inspired by the beach.

Do you have a favorite Sarreid piece that works well in your coastal projects?
We love Sarreid’s consoles! They have a rustic and organic vibe that work well for coastal projects. A few of our go-to pieces are the Persian White Sideboard and the Burns Console.

What coastal project are you most proud of and why?
That is tough one! If I must choose, I think I would select a home we did in Juno Beach, Florida which we refer to as “The Ocean Drive Project”. We worked on every inch of this home, inside and out and it was a complete joy. This home was recently featured on the cover of Luxe Interiors & Design magazine. The design is a mix of New England and French Provence. It is not a typical Florida Beach house. I love the crisp blue and white palette and all the custom millwork and details we created. It is special.
