In this month’s designer spotlight, we had the pleasure of speaking with Cathy Chapman, owner of Chapman Design in Houston, Texas. Chapman’s commitment to excellence has led to a pattern of consistent growth, garnering praise from clients in Manhattan residences to rustic Wyoming ranches.
Q: Can you Tell us a little about your business?
A: I received a BA in Art History from Vanderbilt and then attended the New York School of Interior Design. I began my business in 1985 and the business has grown to a staff of 12 over the years.
Q: How would you describe your style and your process for creating spaces?
A: My style is eclectic and emphasizes creating a sense of welcome and hospitality. I want my clients’ homes to be a refuge for their families to create happy memories. I begin the design process by getting to know the way my clients live and what spaces have appealed to them in the past. It is such a treat to work with so many amazing clients. I have been very lucky and have made so many new friends decorating homes.

Q: Is there a recent project you are most proud of and why?
A: This is a tough question as I have loved so many of my projects! We recently completed a new construction project that looks out over a lake that was a three-year endeavor. I was given tons of creative license, and the clients were super nice.

Q: Why do you turn to Sarreid when looking for certain pieces?
A: The quality of Sarreid furniture is so much nicer than so many reproduction furniture manufacturers. I especially like their finishes; they are very authentic looking.

Q: Do you have a favorite piece from Sarreid?
A: I love the Charity Sideboard. The fluted doors and curved ends make it graceful and unique. I also love the Brooks Demilune for similar reasons!
Q: Where do you find the most inspiration for creating new spaces?
A: Magazines and books are still my favorite source to get my creatives juices flowing.

Q: Lastly, Do you have any design tips you swear by?
A: Creating multiple lighting sources in a room is hugely important. The more lamps and sconces the better!
