Powering Through Distraction

Welcome to June, the midpoint of 2023. At this time of year, we all can become distracted by the change of season, vacations, and life in general. As for me, my home life is a magnificent disaster with our eldest daughter, her husband, and their newborn daughter all living with us for the month of June! Wouldn’t change having them all home at this amazing moment in life for anything in the world.

That said, this June – more than any other – I find myself facing the “focus monster” squarely in the face on a daily basis. My situation is no better or worse than yours or your clientele. We’re all currently, or in the near term, will be distracted to a greater or lesser degree.

Collectively our charge as home furnishings professionals is to find a way to cut through all the noise and get to the all-powerful “YES.” While we do not profess to have all the answers, I know that at the present time, I am more moved/compelled to action by companies that are messaging on a deeper personal level.

For example, we have two large dogs and buy food from Chewy. In the course of a normal order, it became apparent to the Chewy associate that we were expecting our first grandchild. A few days later, a package arrived with a bib, a children’s book, and a handwritten note. Wow! We are now Chewy customers for life.

What can we, as a collective, do to cut through the noise, build deeper relationships, and by association grow a crop of flag-waving brand advocates that can and will carry us through when business conditions look challenging? Finding that answer will be what separates the winners and the losers.
